One Gold, one Silver and two Bronze for kiwi Olympic sailors

Tom Ashley has won windsurfing gold in Hyeres, France at the ISAF Grade 1 Semaine Olympique Francaise Regatta. Jo Aleh won silver and both Andrew Murdoch and Dan Slater won bronze in their respective classes to complete an impressive four medal haul for New Zealand at this major international event.

“We raced the medal race in a perfect 15 knot onshore breeze,” says Ashley.
“The pressure was off as I only had to finish the race to win the event, and I ended up 7th in the race to wrap up the championship with a 12 point lead over Shahar Zubari from Israel.”

“This is a really big win for me as Hyeres is the most important event on the European Tour, second only to the Worlds and Olympics in prestige.”

PHRF, ORC & IRC Revalidations

To all boat owners…

It’s that time of year when owners need to revalidate their PHRF, ORC-Club or IRC certificates for the coming yachting season. All current certificates lapse on 31 May 2007 and need to be renewed to ensure you can continue to enjoy racing.

All current PHRF, ORC and IRC Certificate holders will receive a revalidation form through the mail in the next few days. Please note: When filling out the revalidation form, all fields must be completed. Additional copies of revalidation forms can be downloaded from the Keelboat section of our website through the link below.

Boat Registration…
If you have changed boats please ensure your Boat Registration is current and up to date. To be eligible for racing and a PHRF handicap, boats must be registered under their current owner on the Yachting New Zealand Boat Register. A registration form is available on the Yachting New Zealand website http://www.yachtingnz.org.nz Go to Keelboat then Boat Registration. Or contact Yachting New Zealand by phone: (09) 361 1471, or email: barry@yachtingnz.org.nz

PHRF…
PHRF is a National performance-based handicap rather than a measurement based system (ie: IRC). Computation and adjustment of handicaps is undertaken by Yachting New Zealand on the basis of results of PHRF fleet races. PHRF rankings are updated regularly and published on the website. Any revalidations received after 1 May 2007 will be supplied with a certificate valid until the end of May 2008.

IRC
IRC is a system of measurement which classifies a broad range of cruising and racing ballasted monohull keel boats for competition by providing ratings comprising single figure allowances based on time.

ORC Club
ORC Club is a simplified version of the IMS (International Measurement System) keelboat handicap. It is not intended to replace Club, General or PHRF handicap, and is not a replacement for full-blown IMS ratings, but provides an interim rating system which assesses the boat’s abilities rather than the crews.

Further information on all three above handicap systems can be found in the Keelboat section on our website http://www.yachtingnz.org.nz

A final friendly reminder to owners to please ensure your yacht is always kept up to the required safety standard for each race. The boat must also be in the same trim as declared. Any changes to the boat or changes of ownership, renders all certificates invalid.

ISAF Sail the World Weekend – How to get involved!

The ‘Sail the World’ weekend is one of the highlights of 2007 – ISAF’s centenary year. This historic year is a superb opportunity to promote sailing throughout the world, and the weekend of 1-2 September has been chosen as for everyone to get involved and have some fun.

ISAF’s aim is simple: to get as many people as possible out on the water sailing in the name of ‘Sail the World’. Yachting New Zealand would like to see Clubs get involved with ISAF’s Sail the World weekend whether its getting out on the water at a specially organised event, arranging a ‘try sailing’ day, or dedicating your weekend of racing to Sail the World – it all counts.

There’s plenty of time for planning and ISAF has some neat tools on offer that can help support your event, and identify it as part of this global celebration.

A special ‘Sail the World’ logo has been commissioned for the weekend and can be used by Clubs and event organisers to promote your event, whatever it is you choose to do.

A poster template is available which can be personalised by you, for your event and put up at your Club and in the local area.

Whatever you choose to do to mark the occasion, don’t forget to tell ISAF… email sailtheworld@isaf.co.uk

Club Surveys Outstanding

Below is a list of affiliated Yacht Clubs who are yet to return the Yachting New Zealand Club Survey for 2007 which was due back before Easter.

The information helps Yachting New Zealand to develop trend data and review how the sport is doing on a National level - this information can then be passed on to our club’s. It is also a measure for the organisation to evaluate the services provided to our members and obtain feedback from you on areas you feel we are doing well in as well as highlighting areas we need to work on in the future.

If you have misplaced your copy of the Survey it can be downloaded from the YNZ website through the link below.

PEGs – Performance Enhancement Grants

SPARC and YNZ have agreed to the criteria to be used in assessing applications for Performance Enhancement Grants in 2007 and in 2008 for Olympic Classes.

The change recognises the importance of the pre-Olympic regatta and the relatively light wind conditions of Qingdao, which immediately follows the World Championships in Cascais.

The criteria are published on the YNZ website through the link below.

2007 Secondary Schools Sailing Teams Racing Nationals

The 6 day event that is Secondary Schools Sailing Teams Racing Nationals took place in New Plymouth last week. 150 male and female sailors, including the current world 420 champion, representing 20 schools from around New Zealand have been in New Plymouth for the week to compete for the prestige of top NZ sailing team. The event organisers are ecstatic to have had almost 300 races completed the event.

Winner of the event was decided in an exciting 2 round final, where it came down to the final race among the first and second placed teams and third and fourth placed teams. For the placing of third and fourth it was decided on the line. And in both cases the final winning team was in a losing position for a major part of the race. This all made for exciting viewing.

Tauranga Boys' College was first runners-up were Mahurangi College with Queen Charlotte College third, followed by Whangarei Boys' High School.

Tauranga only conceded one lost during the total event, which was to Mahurangi, in the Final, and the only team to beat Mahurangi during the regatta was Tauranga.

Queen Charlotte was the first South Island team ever to record a top 3 place and it was first time that Whangarei Boys had made the finals.

The girls final saw some close racing, with the local girls from New Plymouth Girls High, who finished second in the silver and having to settle for second place this year to Westlake Girls, who sailed very well to win the Girls final. Nelson Girls and Waikato Dio were both able to record wins in the finals to make the outcome more interesting.

Wellington Boys' High School won the silver fleet.

The top three teams from the gold fleet will travel to Australia in October to defend the interdominion title currently held by New Zealand.

For more information and photos from the event visit the NZ teams racing website through the link below.

P & Starling Venue

The Junior Classes Committee are seeking Letters of Intent from clubs interested in holding the P & Starling National Championships for 2009 & 2010 and North Island Championships for 2008 & 2009.

National Championships are to be held before the 31st of January in the above years (in recent history they have been held over or about the New Year Period) and North Islands are held over Labour weekend.

While it has been normal that when Nationals are hosted by a North Island Club that Club should also hold the North Islands, the Committee will consider requests from Clubs wishing to hold only Nationals or only North Islands.

According to established convention, preference for the 2009 Nationals will be for a Club situated North of Taupo (excluding Auckland) to gain these Championships and for 2010 for a South Island (Canterbury, Otago or Southland) Club - because 2010 Nationals are in the South island we do need a club to host 2009 North islands.

Please send Letters of Intent to the Junior Classes Committee c/- YNZ, PO Box 91209, AMSC, Auckland. Close off date 31 May 2007.

Future path of Secondary School Sailing

The Secondary School National Sailing Championship is a team racing event in 420 dinghies. It is currently organised by the NZ Team Racing Association. At present only teams which qualify top in the regional trials are accepted at the nationals.

It was agreed at this year's managers meeting to investigate the possibility of opening up the event to more teams. Naturally this would involve increased organisation and more resources. As only schools which had qualified this year were able to attend the managers meeting those schools which are interested in participating but did not, are invited to contact Mike Wright on nzmikew@igrin.co.nz

Mike has been asked to recommend a suitable format and is looking for input and expressions of interest.
