On this day the 21st April, in 1995, in the three-way Citizens Cup Defender Trials, Dennis Conner’s Stars and Stripes defeated Bill Koch’s Mighty Mary by 1 minute and 2 seconds in San Diego in a light breeze of 9-10 knots.

It was Conner’s fifth victory in six races and he needed only one more win to clinch the right to defend the America’s Cup against New Zealand’s Black Magic. Bill Koch’s Mighty Mary was crewed by an all woman team (apart from the sole male Dave Dellenbaugh) with New Zealander Lesley Egnot.

Meanwhile, on the helm of Stars and Stripes were both, Dennis Conner, with Paul Cayard as alternate helmsman. Stars and Stripes went on to win the Defender Finals.
