Five Medal Haul for kiwi Olympic sailors

Since the last issue of Briefings, New Zealand sailors had huge success at Princess Sofia Olympic regatta in Mallorca, Spain.

The kiwis won two gold’s, one silver and two bronze medals with a further two top ten finishers. The regatta, which is the first major event for Olympic campaigners on the European circuit, concluded over Easter.

Barbara Kendall and Tom Ashley won the Neil Pryde RS:X Woman’s and Men’s windsurfing classes; Andrew Murdoch came second in the Laser class; and Jo Aleh and Hamish Pepper took thirds in the Laser Radial and Star classes.

For Kendall this is her best ever result on the Neil Pryde RS:X – the new Olympic board. To top it off Kendall also took out the overall prize presented at the event.

“There is an overall trophy for the sailor that has the lowest average score after dividing the sum of all the scores obtained in each race by the number of races sailed in the class at the end of the regatta,” explains Kendall. “They call this sailor the “Tropheo Sar Princess Sofia Absolute Winner.”

“I won this huge perpetual trophy and got to shake the queen and king of Spain’s hand!!!!! I must say I feel pretty chuffed with myself!”

Tom Ashley continued his recent winning form taking out the men’s windsurfing in a fleet of 111.

“I’m stoked to win the Regatta. The conditions were at times difficult with shifts and gusts, but I was pleased with my speed in the light winds,” said Ashley.

“In the medal race I had a great first lap and while I was overtaken by my training partner, I held onto second to take the outright lead.”

Fellow kiwi Jon-Paul Tobin placed sixth in the men’s windsurfing putting two kiwis in the top five percent of the fleet.

All six members of the Yachting New Zealand Olympic Squad competing in the regatta placed in the top ten of their classes.

The next major Olympic class event is French Olympic Sailing Week which gets underway in Hyeres, France on Sunday. A team of 29 New Zealanders are on the entry list for France with representatives in nine classes.

Full results from Princess Sofia regatta are on the regatta website through the link below.

Hyundai YouthSail 07 over

The Hyundai YouthSail 07 youth classes regatta concluded last weekend in Wellington.

Perfect sailing conditions prevailed in Wellington with clear sunny skies for the final day of racing last Saturday. Breeze of up to 12 knots allowed for an on time start to racing after two days abandonment in the regatta due to gale force winds. All four fleets competing sailed five races on Saturday to complete the series.

Hyundai YouthSail 07 was the last and most important regatta to count towards selection for the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team which will represent New Zealand at the ISAF Youth World Championships in Canada this July. The team will be announced by Yachting New Zealand tomorrow, Thursday.

In the RS:X windsurfing, Josh Nixon came close to a clean sweep, winning all but one of the nine races sailed in the regatta. Nixon was so dominant his nearest rival, visiting Australian windsurfer, Alisha Kawalla was 15 points adrift at the conclusion of the regatta.

Richard Ellis of Kohimarama Yacht Club in Auckland was third overall, and the second boy, while Justina Sellers of Howick Sailing Club was fourth overall and second girl.

Josh Junior from host club Worser Bay Boating Club in Wellington, was another stand-out performer at Hyundai YouthSail 07. Junior finished eight points clear of club-mate Mathew Steven in the Laser class. He didn’t finish outside the top two, scoring an impressive six wins from eights races.

Andy Maloney of Auckland took out the Laser Radial class with four wins from five races on the water on the final day. Sam Meech from Tauranga was second overall.

Cushla Hume-Merry, another Wellington local was third overall and first girl to finish, making her the favourite for the girl’s single-handed position in the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team.

Tim Coltman and Ben Goodwin have won the 420 class in a close fought battle where the leading pair changed numerous times. The pair is from Muritai Yacht Club in Wellington. Paul Snow-Hansen and Blair Tuke were second overall five points behind the winners.

Sarah and Emma Berry from Worser Bay Boating Club were the top girls in the 420 class and finished in third overall in the fleet of 21. The Berry sisters were New Zealand’s representatives at last years ISAF Youth World Championships.

Women on Water Opportunities

Women on Water is a committee formed by Yachting New Zealand and chaired by Mandy Scott-Mackie, the first ever female Director of YNZ. Started in February 2006 to address the poor participation of women in sailing, Women on Water, known as “WOW”, has a goal to promote and attract women into sailing at all levels in New Zealand.

WOW is currently in the process of putting together sailing experiences to encourage women into the sport.

The first – a sailing taster weekend with the Royal Port Nicholson Sailing Academy - will be held in Wellington May 19th and 20th.

Other sailing experiences planned for getting women out of the house or office and onto the water are a weekend with Penny Whiting on her keeler in Auckland planned for 23rd and 24th June as well as a “Ladies weekend” on the youth training ship “Spirit of Adventure” planned for August. A charity day to mark the centenary of ISAF on the America’s Cup boat NZL40 in conjunction with Breast Cancer is also in the planning stages.

Watch out for flyers and more information on the WOW page of the YNZ website.

New National Opti Champion

Logan Dunning-Beck, Auckland, is the 2007 Toyota Optimist National Champion despite a disqualification in the final race of the five day regatta.

Logan sailed superbly in the light airs of Hawkes Bay where the breeze struggled to get above 10 knots in any of the 15 races.

Logan has had an excellent sailing season, winning all of the major regattas in the lead up to the nationals. He prefers sailing in light to moderate conditions and put his success today down to picking the shifts correctly in the fickle breezes.

Logan sails for the Wakatere club, and his fellow club mate Chris Steele improved his standing to finish fourth.

Two sailors tied in second position, with James Turner, Murrays Bay winning second spot on a countback from his clubmate Alex Maloney.

James was happy with his effort in the lighter breezes, he prefers sailing in 10 to 15 knots.

The top five place-getters qualify to represent New Zealand at the Optimist world championships in Sardinia in July.

Alex Maloney retained her title as first female competitor.

Information for yachts arriving from overseas

Approximately 3 years ago NZ Customs introduced a rule that all arriving ships (including yachts) have to notify their intended arrival time and venue 48 hours prior to that time. In most cases this would be done from the last port, but can be done by radio.

It would appear that although this requirement has been well circulated throughout the Pacific a large number of skippers are still unaware of the requirement leading to potential prosecution. Customs form NZCS 340 is the form which should be completed and it can be faxed to 0064 3 358 0069 or emailed to yachts@customs.govt.nz

Customs publish a fact sheet; No 32, which provides information on these requirements. This can be found on their website www.customs.govt.nz (link below) then enter Fact Sheet in the search function and you will find it under the general listing of Fact Sheets. Yachting New Zealand has examples of these documents in its library.

Epirbs

Boat owners should be aware that the 121.5 MHz epirbs will not be supported after February 2009. They will be replaced by the 406 MHz beacon. Cat 1 boats are already required to have 406 units and Cat 3 boats will be required to have them after February 2009. Existing Cat 3 certificates without them will become invalid.

406 units are much more accurate and reliable in that they provide information about the particular boat as opposed to just transmitting a distress signal. 406's must be registered at Rescue Coordination Centre for which there is no charge. 121.5 models are still available in shops but at reduced cost given their reduced useful life.

Race Management Q & A Service

The race management Q & A panel were recently asked two questions by race officials - one about the use of the recall flag in a start sequence, and another about the official LAST DAY of a regatta. The questions posed and the response of the panel has now been posted on the YNZ website.
