Brisbane Grammar School Dominates Junior Division

by Suellen Hurling on 12 Apr 2007
Junior Division of the 2007 Yachting Queensland BMW Motorline Secondary Schools Team Racing Championships blown out on day one of the competition and rescheduled for 10th April.

The sailors arrived at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron for a 0630 competitors meeting before departing Manly Harbour to commence racing at 0800 hours.

The southerly breeze was a consistent 13 knots before the sailors started however once the first warning was fired all elements of wind simply vanished. The Junior Division sailors were forced to race in extremely like fluky winds before the south easterly finally returned to Waterloo Bay.

After 28 races Brisbane Grammar School were finally determined as the 2007 Junior Champions after a nail biting finish with Brisbane Boys College 3 who placed second. 2006 Junior Champions Matthew Finders Anglican College finished third after the long round robin series.

Chief Umpire John Middleton has umpired at this regatta for the last 7 years and said the interest in team racing shown by Queensland schools is excellent. 'This would have to be the best region for team racing with more and more schools becoming involved each year. The high standard of racing clearly shows the commitment for the sport and it’s great to come back to RQYS to umpire these young sailors.'

Racing for the Open Division continues today with teams competing in pools before relegation into the gold, silver and bronze fleets for the finals on Friday.

The 0630 competitors meeting began the day with six teams now on the water about to commence racing for day. Pool 3 will race in two rounds today as their division being postponed yesterday afternoon due to the additional time it took to race the Junior Division.

16 teams in total will race today all vying for that coveted position in the gold fleet which will determine the overall champions for 2007.

This regatta is the final team racing event before the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron hosts the 2007 Westpac Australian Team Racing Championships scheduled for the May long weekend.
