The 2007 Brisbane to Gladstone race multihull fleet suffered in heavy weather this morning, with two catamarans capsizing, both crews were rescued by other race competitors.
Just north of Indian Head, towards the northern tip of Fraser Island at about 3:15am this morning Richard Jenkin’s 11 metre Dancing Emu capsized.
Four crew were transferred to Phil Day’s sloop Rhythmic and two of them have since been air lifted off by helicopter to Hervey Bay.
Jenkins and another crew member transferred to a fishing vessel who attempted unsuccessfully to right The Dancing Emu. The attempt had to be abandoned in the heavy conditions.
Then about 7:00 am this morning an EPIRB was deployed, in the Lady Elliott, Lady Musgrave area. AusSAR responded quickly and a radio message alerted the fleet. Mike Hodges 15 metre catamaran Renaissance diverted course to investigate.
When they reached the reported position seven nautical miles off Lady Musgrave Island, they found New Caledonian Philippe Coste and his five crew sitting on the hulls of the capsized Rogntudjuuu.
The six sailors were transferred to Renaissance and are on their way to Gladstone.
At 7:57:03, Martin Riley’s Raw Nerve crossed the finish line, the overall line honours winner in the 2007 Brisbane to Gladstone Race. It was fifth line honours win, the last four in a row for the Bloomfield modified Crowther 50.
Stuart Bloomfield reports from Raw Nerve.
