Jason Saunders takes Starling Nationals

by Sail-World on 31 Jan 2007
Jason Saunders of Tauranga has won the 2007 Starling National Championships at Nelson YC.

In doing so the the Saunders family have completed a rare if not unique feat in New Zealand sailing history, where two brothers hold three of the top Junior sailing national championships, in the one year.

Earlier in January, brother Thomas won the Tanner and Tauranga Cups, for P-class, also sailed at Nelson in celebration of their 150th anniversary.

There was no racing on the penultimate day, due to high winds. And, even on the last day the wind cranked between 10 and 25 knots - giving four seasons in one race.

Jason Saunders had the regatta under control going into the final races and the real contest was on between several skippers who were all close on points. In the end, former Tanner and Tauranga Cup holder, Paul Snow-Hansen was the best peformed and most consistent, and came though to take second overall.

In spite of the wind peaking at up to 30 knots at times in the regatta, observers did not believe it was a heavy air event, with a wide range of conditions being enjoyed by the sailors, and the event provided a good test of all round sailing ability.
