Saunders leads in Starling Nationals at Nelson

by Sail-World on 29 Jan 2007
Tauranga's Jason Saunders is looking set to match the feat of his younger brother in taking a National title at Nelson in 2008.

With two days left to sail in the 2008 Starling Nationals, Saunders is leading the pointsscore by a comfortable 10pts with five races left to sail over the next two days. Tied up for second place is Darren Kennedy (Tauranga) and Andy Maloney (Kerikeri), who each have 22 points.

Last week, Jason Saunder's younger brother Thomas pulled off a double win in the Tanner and Tauranga Cups, and the scene is set for a very unique double in New Zealand sailing history. Saunders does have one DNF on his scorecard, which has been his discard, and there is some pressure to be consistent and a little conservative for the remainder of the regatta.

The show is far from over with two days racing ahead.

So far conditionhave been varied, to put it mildly ranging from just above zero knots through to 30 knot winds at the other end of the scale. The forecast for today is for 10 kts rising to 25 kts which covers most options. Three races are scheduled for today, and two for tomorrow, Tuesday, the fleet has been split in Gold and Silver after the Qualifying Round at the start of the regatta.
