One race on final day in P & Starling North Islands

by Sail-World on 23 Oct 2006
Starling runner-up, Jason Saunders, chases down the P-clas series leader, Jamie Dawson (P-484) on the second day of the P class and Starling North Islands Napier October 2006 Event Media
Murrays' Bay Sailing Club's Jamie Dawson has taken the North Island P-class championship sailed at Napier. Light winds meant that only one race was sailed. The Starlings turned out to be a Tauranga YPBC benefit with Sam Meech taking the winner's trophy, and Tauranga sailors took all the podium places.

In the P-class, which attracted a fleet of 48 boats, the silver and bronze medals were taken by female skippers, with Alexandra Maloney from Kerikeri taking second place, after finishing second in the final race. Third overall was Chelsea Whitburn, who won the Bronze fleet in the 29er Worlds, in Weymouth UK, earlier this year. Whitburn travelled all the way from Dunedin for the regatta. All told, there were four female sailors in the top ten overall.

After a delay waiting wind the last race racing started in a steady north easterly breeze of 8 to 10 knots. Jamie Dawson, was the overnight leader, used great tactics to push his closest rival Thomas Saunders down the fleet assuring Dawson of the title.

In the Starlings, overnight leader Jason Saunders had a match race with fellow Tauranga sailor, Sam Meech, with Meech taking the final race by half a metre, with Saunders second, leaving both on nine points and with three wins and three second places each. The tie had to go to a third level of tiebreak and Meech won on the basis that he had beaten Saunders in the final race. Third placegetter, Bruce Kennedy was well astern of the other two on points with 31 pts for the regatta.

Briar Mannering (Napier SC) was the top female skipper finishing 12th in the 63 strong Open fleet, and led the final race until the last leg finishing third in the final race just behind Meech and Saunders. Mannering is in her first year of Starling sailing.
