The revamped Yachting New Zealand High Performance Academy will officially launch on Wednesday 25 October in Auckland. This week Nathan Handley was appointed as High Performance Academy Coach to help support the reinvigorated Academy programme.
Handley will be an asset to the High Performance Academy with a solid coaching history enhanced by his wide ranging sailing career which includes 470’s, 49ers and Americas Cup. Handley placed 8th at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, sailing in the 49er class together with Dan Slater.
'Nathan will be engaging mostly with the 470 & 49er classes, with a view to build the future in the double handed disciplines,' explains Marty Watson.
The Yachting New Zealand High Performance Academy includes up to 55 High Performance sailors who are the best in their class in New Zealand. Sailors are invited annually into the High Performance Academy by demonstrating performance and commitment to improvement.
Talented coaching staff and sport science services are provided to sailors within the Windsurfing, Double-handed, Single-Handed and Specialized class squads that make up the group. The High Performance Academy is managed by Yachting New Zealand’s High Performance and Youth Director, Marty Watson and its goal is to achieve successes in international competition and develop talent to Olympic Squad standard.
High Performance Academy supporters include NZAS, the Century Foundation, Maesrk Line, NZL Yachting Trust, A Foster & Co, NZI Marine, Davies Customs, PDQ Print, TP Cookson Boatbuilders and Toyota NZ.
