After not having raced the Mumm 30 since the Worlds in France last June,
Australian Richard Perini, the 2005 World Champion and his Foreign Affair team is back at it in Holland, Michigan, at the 2006 Mumm 30 North American titles, as Richard Perini reports
‘We’re sailing on Lake Michigan, opposite side to Chicago. 15 boats make up
the fleet that will race 10 races over 3 days.
’We have a few new faces on board for this regatta, so we've spent as much time as we could in the last few days trying to gel as a team and get sails and boat sorted out in preparation for the Mumm 30 Worlds in Miami late in the year.
‘Our crew for this regatta comprises regulars Darren Jones, Mike Dunstan and Tom King, with Stacey Jackson joining us on bow. Genevieve Tulloch from California is filling in as trimmer, and Led Pritchard is working the pit in addition to prepping and maintaining the boat.
’Today started with 12 - 18 knots and we got off to a great start, with some big shifts mixing up the places during the race, great downwind positioning and sailing got us into 1st for the finish. Race 2 again had substantial shifts and pressure changes, a 7th place perhaps a little disappointing. Races 3 and 4 were sailed in a diminishing
breeze, with Foreign Affair getting third in both races. ‘
Each race had a different winner; Race 2 went to Team Bold, Race 3 to Barking Mad, and Race 4 to Illusion.
Philippe Kahn's Pegasus leads Day 1 on 13 points from Foreign Affair (14), Barking Mad (16), Team Krav Maga (18) and Team Bold (24).
