World Champs remain in second in 420 Junior Europeans

by Sail-World on 18 Aug 2006
The eighth placed crew of Bernardo Freitas and Manuel Arriaga sail upwind on the second day of the Finals in the Gold Fleet. Sarah and Emma Berry (NZL 52711) are lying in 13th place in the Silver fleet Event Media
Open World 420 Champions, Carl Evans and Peter Burling have remained in second place overall after the second day of finals racing in the 420 Junior European Championships.

However the gap on the lead boat has narrowed to just one point after the the French crew of Berenger Balzeau and Mathieu Fountainewere judged to be OCS in Race 5, which has reshaped their points after the discard race came into play overnight.

Carl Evans and Peter Burling finished second on the water in both races sailed overnight.

Only two races were sailed today in what were described as strong winds of 18 to 20 knots.

Evans and Burling are sailing a three year old charter boat from the same maker as their New Zealand hull, however are understood to be having some issues with hull flexibility, also their starting is not as crisp as the French crew.

Conditions are expected to lighten for the remaining days of the regatta which could play into the Kiwis hands.

The report from the 420 class website follows (however it was written prior OCS confirmation of the French crew):

Five races have now been concluded in the final series of the International 420 Class Junior European Championships. Strong winds, gusting up to 20 knots, with two metre waves of irregular form are providing these young sailors with very challenging conditions. All have risen to this challenge with performances showing great maturity. With the 420s moving faster through the water than the RIBs, the race team had to work equally hard.

The French Crew, Berenger Balzeau & Mathieu Fountaine, have dominated the gold fleet with four bullets. Current World Champions, Carl Evans & Peter Burling, are pressing hard, consistently finishing in the top three. Portuguese sailors, António Rosa & Francisco Lacerda, have moved in to third place above the Israelis, Amit Brokman & Moshe Appel.

In the ladies competition, Sophie Ainsworth & Jasmine Husband (GBR) currently in 9th position are 15 places ahead of reigning Ladies World Champions and defending Junior European Ladies Champions, Hannah Mills and Peggy Webster (GBR).

For part of the Championship, the 420 Class Association have provided the expert services of Jim Saltonstall, known worldwide for his expert coaching of sailors from youth upwards and the coach appointed to the ISAF Youth World Sailing Championship. His steady hand has produced excellent video footage for his evening debriefs, which have attracted huge audiences, with some 470 sailors also sitting in. His presence in the boat park has been a great help to the development of some of the sailors who are attending an international event for the first time.
