Burling and Evans continue to build lead in 420 Worlds

by Sail-World on 5 Aug 2006
Carl Evans and Peter Burling lead the mens Gold fleet on the first day of Finals racing Event Media
New Zealand's Carl Evans and Peter Burling continue to build a substantial lead in the World 420 Championships being sailed in Gran Canaria. They finished the day with a third, a first and an uncharacteristic 18th place. They lead by 18 points from a second New Zealand crew of Simon Cooke and Scott Illingworth.

However it is too early to put the world championship in the bag. There are six races left to sail and today's result in Race 6 underlines the fact that anything can happen.

In the Womens Gold fleet it has become very tight for the New Zealanders. Best placed are Sarah Bilkey and Rosie Sargisson who are now in tenth overall. However they are only one place and eight points clear of Shelley Hesson and Bianca Barbarich-Backer with Georgina Hill and Michelle Kennedy in 14th place overall.

Hesson and Barbarich-Backer had a couple of good races overnight finishing second and third. They will go on to sail in the Womens 470 event at the pre-pre Olympics in two weeks and this is the first international regatta for this combination.

From the Official website:

Mens Open:

Crew of Carl Evans and Peter Burling keep being unbeatable as they continue to be outstanding leaders at the end of the second day of final series in the International 420 Class World Championship which is being held in the Bay of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, under the organization of the hosting Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria.

They scored a first and a third place in the two first races, but they finished in the eighteenth place in the last race. Nevertheless, they still keep a difference of 18 scores with regards to Simon Cook and Scott Illingworth also from New Zealand and the second in the overall.

The third place was for Fernando Lodos from Gran Canaria, who is participating together with French Julien Pulve, winning a second place in their best score.

The forth place was for Francisco Cárdenes and Juan Manuel Cerezo with a seventh place in their best score. Fifth place for José Antonio Medina and Antonio del Castillo-Olivares out of del Real Club Náutico’s race team, who won the last race today.

Today Friday, the 4th of August wind and conditions where as follows:

Changing wind out of the northeast. Gentle breeze. Wind strength of 2,5 at a speed of 12 knots. Large waves.

These are provisory results as there are 6 mores races to be held. 3 of them on Saturday, and 3 on Sunday. After the races, the Closing Ceremony will take place in Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria at 20:00 hours.

Womens Open:

The Spanish crew of Tara Pacheco and Elena Barambio out of Club de Regatas Suroeste de Mogán keep their leadership today in the International 420 Ladies Class World Championship which is being held in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria under the organization of the hosting Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria.

Tara and Elena reached excellent scores gaining a seventh and two sixth places in the three races held today, overcoming their nearest opponents at the moment, the British and the Greek teams. They are keeping the first place in the Gold ranking list, composed of the 38 best crews fighting for the title.

The other Spanish team formed by Agueda Suria and Marta Martínez from Valencia, started with a second and a eighth place and finished with a ninth place in the last race in the overall.

The wind strength continues to be lower: 2,5 at a speed of 12 knots, and a sea with large waves in this racing area. Wind coming out of the northeast was quite changing during the races, making it difficult to competitors.

The World Championship will continue each day with 3 races until the last day on Sunday, 6th of August. After the races, the Closing Ceremony will take place at 20:30 at the Real Club Náutico’s facilities
