420 Worlds- Gold and Silver Fleet Results - First day of Finals

by Sail-World on 4 Aug 2006
Jason Saunders and Bruce Kennedy (NZL 52362) chase the Gold fleet Event Media
Results are to hand for the first day of finals racing. Winds were understood to have been very fresh.

Carl Evans and Peter Burling (NZL) continue to dominate the Open Gold fleet with three wins from four races and now enjoy a 14 point margin over the seond placed German crew.

In the Womens fleet, the New Zealand crew of Rosie Sargission and Sarah Bilkey have slipped back to fifth place overall thanks to a 29th place in Race 4, however they should move higher when discards are applied. A Spanish crew lead the event foloowed by former top UK Optimist sailor, Hannah Mills and Peggy Webster.

Over in the Womens Silver fleet, Kaitlin Stork and Molly Lucas (USA) lead Sarah and Emma Berry (NZL) by three points.

No results have been posted for the Open Silver fleet.

From the Club website:

Today, the Spanish team formed by Tara Pacheco and Elena Barambio out of Club de Regatas Suroeste de Mogán became leaders of the International 420 Ladies Class World Championship, which has been taking place in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria under the organization of the hosting Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria.

Tara and Elena reached a first, a forth and a tenth place in the 3 races, getting higher scores than their nearest opponents at the moment, the competitors from New Zealand and from UK. This means that they have gained the highest place in Gold, which is composed of the 38 best crews struggling for the title.

Sailors faced wind running at an average speed of 15 knots, out of the north and a sea with large waves. These weather conditions have changed with regards to the previous days, but it is ideal for the progress of this competition, for the 3 scheduled races were able to be held once again.

The World Championship will go on with 3 races each day, until the 6th of August. After that, the Closing Ceremony will be held at 20:00 hours at the Real Club Náutico’s facility.

Crews which were in the first and second place, that is to say, Sarah Bilkey and Rosie Sargisson from New Zealand, and Sophie Weguelin and Katrina Hughes from UK, didn’t have a good day, losing places in the overall.

Amazing soaring of the other Spanish team formed by Agueda Suria and Marta Martínez from Valencia, gaining 10 places and scoring a seventh place in the final series after a second, a forth and a nineteenth place.

The crew of Carl Evans and Peter Burling from New Zealand is standing out in the first place of the Open International 420 Class World Championship, which is taking place in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, under the organization of the hosting Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria.

Carl and Peter won two first and a third in the 3 races held today, and they finished leaders with a wide difference over the second placed Max Dohse/Max Ziegelmayer.

The Spanish team formed by Francisco Cárdenes and Juan Manuel Cerezo out of Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria had an excellent behaviour, wining a second, a sixth and a thirteenth place allowing them to roar back to the fifth place in the overall.

Fernando Lodos out of Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria, participating together with his teammate Julián Pulve and representing France, are still progressing and have already gained a sixth place, while José Antonio Medina and Antonio del Castillo- Olivares out of Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria, began winning second and finished eighth in the overall.

Macia Alemany and Joan Duran from Baleares Islands, reached up a fourteenth place in the overall.

Wind came out of north at an average speed of 15 knots. Large waves on the sea. Ideal weather conditions for the progress of this competition.

The World Championships will continue until next Sunday, 6th of August and after that, the Closing Ceremony will take place at the Real Club Náutico’s facility.
