Aleh drops two in Womens Laser Radial Worlds

by Sail-World on 3 Aug 2006

New Zealand’s Jo Aleh, sailing in fresh conditions of 14 to 17 knots and one metre seas has dropped two places in the overall standings to lie in 10th overall, in the Gold Fleet of the 2006 World Championship for the Womens Laser Radial.

The sensation of the day came in the second race when defending champion Paige Railey (USA) was Disqualified by the on the water judge for sculling at the start, infringing RRS 42. As she already had a penalty for RRS 42 from a previous race (requiring an immediate 720 turn), Railey was obliged to withdraw from the race immediately. For a third infringement she is out of the regatta.

Currently Railey is in seventh place overall with a very outside chance of defending her title in a class where she hardly dropped arace in the big events last year.

The current leader of the championship with eight races sailed is Lijia Xu of China, who has performed well in the big breezes. In contrast, Aleh is a light airs specialist – conditions that are widely expected for the Olympics in China.

Miranda Powrie is the next best placed New Zealander in the Womens Olympic singlehander, lying in 30th place overall having scored 17th and 30th in today's Gold Fleet racing. The other New Zealander in this fleet, Sara Winther couldn't emulate her race win of yesterday however finished a respectable 15th in the first race but came in 40th in the 45 strong fleet in the second.

To put the Kiwi performances in a little perespective, the top Australian in the Gold Fleet is Sarah Blanck lying in 18th overall, with Krystle Weir in 24th overall.

New Zealand's Olivia Powrie is leading the Silver fleet having missed the cut into the Gold fleet, yesterday by just two places. She had placings of 11th and fifth today. Cushla Hume-Merry is 18th in the Silver Fleet having finished 10th and 12th in the 44 boat fleet.

In the Mens Championship, Max Andrews is the best performed lying in either overall, with John Junior in 13th and Sandall James dropping to 23rd overall.

Tomorrow is a rest day.
