Medal Results - 470 European Championships
by Lindsey Bell/GJN on 20 Jun 2006
France dominated the men`s event at the Open Nissan Cup 470 European Championships in Balatonfüred, Hungary. The French team of Nicolas Charbonnier and Oliver Bausset won the final medal race on Sunday but did not figure in the overall medal positions.
The Bonnaud brothers, Benjamin and Romain did enough to take the European title finishing one point ahead of Ronan Drano and Ronan Floch, with Pierre Leboucher and Vincent Garos taking the Bronze and completing the all French podium.
Nic Asher and Elliot Willis were the highest placed Brits, in 34th. Defending champions and Olympic silver medallists Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield missed the event due to Rogers' fractured wrist.
In the women´s event the German pair, Stefanie Rothweiler and Vivien Kussatz, went into the medal race with the Gold already theirs. The Japenese pair, Ai Kondo and Midori Ikemoto, won the final race but it was the second place finishers, Sylvia Vogl and Caroline Flatscher from Austria who moved up to take the Silver with the Spanish, Marina Gallego and Laia Tutzo, the Bronze.
Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark posted Skandia Team GBR's best result at these Championships, finishing seventh overall in the women's fleet. The World Championship silver medallists had a strong start at the beginning of their Europeans campaign, in second place up until racing on Thursday. But a disappointing 19 and 14 from the fourth and fifth dropped them down to eighth place. With Friday's racing cancelled through lack of wind and just one race each day on Saturday and Sunday, Bassadone-Clark had little chance to shake off the double figures and make their way back through the fleet. A third in Sunday's final medal race, featuring the top ten boats from the fleet, allowed for a small improvement with Bassadone-Clark moving up to finish the regatta in seventh.
