DJUICE DRAGONS set sail for their qualification race

by Lizzie Green on 14 May 2001

Djuice dragons, the Norwegian entry into the Volvo Ocean Race, is sailing
out of Miami on Tuesday May 15 after two and a half month's training on
their identical Laurie Davidson-designed V.O.60s. The dragons are heading
to Baltimore/Annapolis in leg one of their qualification race. The black
and pink boats carrying 25 sailors from seven countries will arrive in
Annapolis on May 18, stopping for 36 hours before setting out for La
Rochelle on Sunday 20th. (ETA for La Rochelle is June 2, Gothenburg June 8
and Sandefjord June 9.)

As the operations in Miami wind to a close, skipper Knut Frostad remarks
that the team has accomplished what they set out to with the two-boat
testing and team building. 'We had perfect conditions for the first part of
testing and development and the boats are now performing very well', says
Frostad.

The main objectives for the Miami-Baltimore leg are to practise the
different strategic options, getting more race training and focussing on
the Chesapeake Bay area - the Baltimore-La Rochelle leg being the actual
qualification. It is on this leg that the boats and crew must perform at
their premium.

djuice I is skippered by Frostad and crewed by the race team with djuice II
crewed by the sparring team plus a few 'guest stars': Erle Williams,
currently tactician for Team New Zealand will be skipper, Vincent Geake,
navigator from Silk Cut, Whitbread 1997-98 will navigate and Mark
Mendelblatt, currently with One World America's Cup team and Justin
Clougher will join the trim/helm lineup. The crews will change slightly for
each leg.

Conditions for the sail are expected to be easterly winds turning southwest
and increasing to 20 knots, then going nor'east and very light, (5-10
knots), generally light and variable. 'It's going to be challenging for the
last part in Chesapeake Bay because it is a difficult place,' says
meteorologist Wouter Verbraak. 'If there are sea breezes and local effects
together with shallow waters and strong currents, it will be perfect test
conditions for the boat, the gear and the team.'
