Organisers of the Mooloolaba to Airlie Beach yacht race have announced a specific racing event for multihulled vessels. The inaugural Hogs to Hogs
Mooloolaba to Airlie Beach multihulled yacht race will start on the 5th August 2001, just one day after the quality field of mono hulls entered in the
Hogs Breath Cafe Mooloolaba to Airlie Beach yacht race heads up the Queensland coast bound for the tropical resort town of Airlie Beach in the
Whitsundays.
The race, the first event held specifically for multihulled vessels in the Mooloolaba to Airlie classic, is designed to highlight the emerging quality of
developing multihulls. The entrants will race from the Hogs Breath Cafe, Mooloolaba to Hogs Headquarters in Airlie Beach.
Miles Wood, Intergalactic Marketing Manager for the Race sponsor, Hogs Breath Cafe, said the multihulled race adds another feeder event to the hectic
Whitsunday Festival of Sail in August. 'We thought it was time the multihulls had their own event. The number of multihulls supporting and competing
in events like Hogs Breath Race Week in the Whitsundays has increased considerably over the 12 year history of Race Week. When you consider the
technology and amazing speed of multihulled vessels of Keith Glover's Trilogy in last years Hogs Breath Race Week along with the number of
multihulls that both race and cruise up the Queensland coast each year it really makes sense to reward owners and skippers with a chance to race in
one of the toughest and most rewarding races in Australia'.
'There is no doubt that during August the Whitsundays is the place for yacht racing in Australia. Now owners and skippers of multihulled vessels can
join in by competing in the Hogs to Hogs Mooloolaba to Airlie Beach race then compete for some of Boss Hogs crystal during Hogs Breath Race Week
and, following Race Week, join the fleets in Hamilton Island Race Week, the Bowen Multihull Rendezvous or enjoy the fun and antics of the Great
Whitsunday Fun Race', Wood added.
Miles also paid tribute to the organising authorities, the Whitsunday Sailing Club and the Mooloolaba Yacht Club for their commitment to the new
event. 'The two clubs have worked hard to get this event up and running and their organising committees have worked hard to make this event an
important part of the annual race from Mooloolaba to Airlie Beach' he said.
The Whitsundays resort town of Airlie Beach also holds some pleasant surprises for first time Hogs to Hogs Mooloolaba to Airlie Beach race
competitors with excellent and inexpensive facilities at Abel Point Marina. The Marina has 237 berths and an adjoining Marina Village with restaurant,
cafe and shops as well as maritime businesses such as chandlery, mechanics, electricians, a refrigeration specialist and sail makers. There is a
booking office for all Whitsunday trips and accommodation at the Marina along with bottle shops, a laundry and bathrooms for use by race competitors.
The Marina has recently commissioned an expansion program, designed to equip the marina with 30 and 40 metre berths along with a dredged depth
of over 4 metres and a new fuel wharf and pump out station making the marina one of the best to be found along the eastern seaboard.
Airlie Beach also boasts an amazing range of accommodation - from five star to backpacker hostels - accommodation for skippers and crew easily
accessed by booking through Airlie Beach.com Travel Centre.
