420 Nationals to Evans and Burling

by Sail-World and NZ 420 Assoc on 19 Apr 2006
Simon Cooke and Scott Illingworth finished second overall in their first 420 regatta together. www.420sailing.org.nz
The 2006 420 Class National Championships were sailed from the Naval Point club in Christchurch. Thirty six boats competed as the class builds up to the 2006 and 2007 World championships.

Carl Evans/Peter Burling won overall, with Simon Cooke/Scott Illingworth second and Jason Saunders/Bruce Kennedy third in the open fleet. First place in the women's fleet went to Georgina Hill/Michelle Kennedy, Susannah Pyatt/Bianca Barbarich Bacher second and Sarah Bilkie/Rosie Sargisson third.

Conditions for the nine race series were excellent, with cool breezes ranging from 10 knots - 22 knots on the first day- along with a short and sharp chop, moderate breezes on the second day, and lighter breezes on the third.

Three races were sailed back to back each day - consistent wind, a well behaved fleet of 36 and good race management saw the fleet completing their races and returning to shore in the warmth of the afternoon sun.

Two general recalls on day one allowed four or five boats to make it to the start line after leaving the shore very late - having unloaded their boats from a container two days earlier in Auckland, driving day and night and then setting up their boats at Naval Point... Simon Cooke and Scott Illingworth arrived at the start line as the third start hooted and went on to win the race. Carl Evans and Peter Burling's ability to work their way through the fleet each race to come across the line in first or second position each time earned them a well deserved win, despite an OCS.
