The Clipper fleet is quietly laid up at Subic Bay Yacht Club, Subic Bay, Philippines until further notice, and Clipper Ventures is footing the bill for crews to fly home for the interim.
The recent discovery of 'loose keel bolts' on Glasgow Clipper during the race leg Singapore-Qingdao caused the fleet to be immediately diverted to SBYC while a team from Clipper Ventures, including Race Director Tim Hedges, flies to the Philippines to assess the problem.
After Glasgow, five more boats in the 10-strong fleet were found to have loose keel bolts.
Whether this is a design fault or a construction deficiency remains to be discovered.
Crewing on Uniquely Singapore Clipper, Claus Karthe (presently Director of the Philippine Hobie Challenge Foundation, former director of MYC, and a member of SBYC) said that 'all the sailors and organisers are very happy with the way that the SBYC's General Manager Mari Vargas and his staff have quickly made arrangements for the reception of the fleet... not only for berthing but they also arranged at short notice evening functions with live music and a dance troupe to entertain the unexpected visitors who were made to feel most welcome.'
The boats are currently being lifted and examined at Watercraft Ventures. Clipper Ventures' event organisers are reported to be talking to Subic-based boat builders Advanced Composite Systems (ACS) with respect to repairs and modifications to the fleet.
