Skandia Geelong Week Cruising Division grows

by Di Pearson on 29 Jan 2006
The largest contingent at Skandia Geelong Week came in the three-division Cruising Class, boasting 150 yachts in the three divisions.

The 51 boat Division A, three race series for the Coca Cola trophy was hotly contested with the winner only decided in the final race.

Peter Davidson’s Inglis 37 Addiction (RMYS) pipped the Ian Watson skippered Farr 11.6 Nimrod II (RGYC) by half a point with fellow club member Kevin Bell third skippering his Adams 15 Volante.

Included in the division was Brit Alex Thompson’s Open 60, Hugo Boss. Built for single-handed speed racing, 'The Boss' finished third on line and first on handicap in the Passage Race.

Two media personnel went along for the ride, Australian Sailing editor Vanessa Dudley and The Daily Sail’s James Boyd, all the way from England. Both will be filing reports on their ride to Geelong.

Thompson took time during the week to show the multitudes over his speed machine.

In Division B, the Pecks & Stokes trophy was won by Ingenue, David James’ Jeanneau (Vic) by one point from Stuart Morrison-Jack’s Wright 10, Copyright. Douglas Lithgow sailed his Noelex 30 to third place in the 53 yacht division.

Division C fielded 46 entries and again it was a close series for the Skilled trophy. At the end of their three race series, Douglas Lacey’s Columbia 27 Taranaki overcame a channel from Harry Leggett’s Tango in the final race.

While Taranaki racked up a second place, Tango missed her chance, recording a disappointing 14th place, leaving her owner with a second overall. Leakie Morris sailed Mary Bryant, his Spacesailor 24 into third place, with Michael Bakker (In The Red) finishing on equal points, but losing out on countback.

Competitors enjoyed ideal conditions on Corio Bay, their series sailed off the host venue, Royal Geelong Yacht Club.
