Five Nations sailing Singapore Straits Regatta

by Rob Kothe on 18 Jan 2006
Light winds are expected for the first two days of the Singapore Straits regatta starting today. This morning forecasters were anticipating 5-10 knot northerlies, while thunderstorms are expected to build tomorrow and stronger north easterly winds are likely as the series progresses..

The 2006, 12th edition of the Singapore Straits Regatta (SSR) features 28 boats, competing in four different categories: IRC A, IRC B, Performance Handicap (or PY), and One-Design Class, and representing at least five different countries including Singapore, China (Hong Kong), Indonesia, Australia and the Philippines. Starting today, January 18th, the boats will race over five days, and up to eight races.

The SSR brings full circle the Asian yacht circuit, forming the troika of Malaysia’s Raja Muda International Regatta, Phuket’s King’s Cup, and the SSR, traditionally held in Singapore and Indonesian waters. Taken together, the combined results from the three major regattas form the Perpetual Cup Series, with the overall winner bestowed the coveted Sir Thomas Lipton trophy.

In IRC A, defending champion from Hong Kong, Neil Pryde, returns with a new HiF, a Farr 52i to take on fellow Hong Kong boats Mandrake (skippered by Nick Burn & Fred Kinmonth), the DK46 Drumstick (Robert Knight), which sailed to victory by Ray Roberts as Quantum Racing in December’s Phuket Kings Cup and Singapore’s own Team F5/Foxy Lady’s Bill Bremner, who will racing this year in his new Sydney 40.

Local entries include regular racers in the local circuit – Choo Tze Wei (Platu), Jack Tan (RSYC Dua), Kelvin Lim (RSYC Satu), Vladmir Borstnar (SMUve), and Wildon Goh (Quarterdeck) representing the Singapore Management University, and not forgetting Asia’s first female Mini Transat competitor, Elaine Chua, sailing on the Sydney 32 Scallywag. Jesus Avecilla makes his debut in his new Beneteau 36.7, Selmar Star, joining first-time SSR competitor Australian Geoffrey Hill (Strewth). sailing his Lyons 49.

The 2006 SSR’s Official Timekeeper and major sponsor is PANERAI, a leading brand of exclusive high quality watches with a deep nautical heritage
