The Canberra-owned yacht Gillawa remains the only yacht still at sea in the 32nd Gosford to Lord Howe Island ocean race – and she was still 25 nautical miles from the island mid-afternoon.
Three other tail-enders reached Lord Howe Island during the last 16 hours, Debonair (Eric Frank) just after 10pm race time last night, Polaris of Belmont (Chris Dawe) at 07:37:53 this morning and Delta Wing (Bill Koppe) at 14:18:54 this afternoon. All are now anchored in the island’s coral lagoon, the weary crews stretching their legs and quenching their thirsts ashore.
Gillawa, skippered by David Kent, is not expected to finish the exceptionally slow 414 nautical mile race until late this evening, his crew spending six days and nights at sea.
Polaris of Belmont and Delta Wing both sailed under the burgee of Gosford Sailing Club with several club members on Delta Wing in addition to owner Bill Koppe – Bob Swan, Stan Twindley and Warren Carlson.
Young club member Lachlan Stewart-Baker, who turned 18 in time to sail in his category 1 ocean race, crewed on Debonair.
The combined Sydney Amateur Sailing Club and Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron team of Azzurro, Bright Morning Star and Merlin has won the Gosford to Lord Howe Race team trophy for the race.
