Le Bateau wins Cruising Division - Hamilton Island

by Rob Kothe on 27 Aug 2005
Sydney RSYS sailor Bob Maidment and some well-credentialed mates sailed Le Bateau to victory in the Cruising division at Hamilton Island today.

Maidment is the executive chairman of Videoeazy and his mates include John Kirby, the chairman of Village Roadshow and two veteran Australian Olympic sailors, Tokyo Gold Medallist Dick Sergeant who won in the 5.5 class and Carl Ryves, who sailed in the Mexico Olympics in 1968, with Sergeant in the Dragon class.

Le Bateau (the boat) is a Jeanneau 45.2 cruiser. She has a 5.5 kva Genset, electric winches, air-conditioning, freezers and DVD player, certainly very un-racy. Obviously the windiest Hamilton Island regatta since 1999 suited the heavy weight cruiser

Maidment commented ‘its been a wonderful trip up from Sydney, this is just a great place to cruise around, plenty of winter sunshine, lots of wind and wonderful scenery. We came up slowly from Mooloolaba, inside Fraser Island, then to Yepoon and up to Mackay. We will take the boat back down to Mackay tomorrow and fly south and come up again later for more cruising.

Second in the Cruising Division is Michael Milne’s Jeanneau 52.5 Jamata, in third place was Greg Maguire’s Jeanneau SO 54DS Rex.
