Quickie wins Sydney 32 regatta

by Media Services on 1 Mar 2005
Gusto - one of many participants in the regatta Dave Bull
The Sydney 32’s joined 13 of their bigger brothers (Sydney 38s) in last weekend’s Sydney Yachts One Design Regatta held by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron on Sydney Harbour.

Seven races were held over two days, with the last boat crossing the line getting less than 60 seconds before the next five min. gun. Racing Sydney 32s does not get more fun than this.

Quickie, launched in Oct. 04, by Stuart Muirhead and his two partners, has always been on the pace, but this weekend, their tactics, boat handling and consistency paid off. Quickie lived up to her name, taking four guns, never finishing lower than second, to gain a well deserved regatta win.

Dave and Zorana Bull‘s Jester took the honours in three races, but were outsailed this weekend by some stiff competition.

‘We really enjoyed the series and still managed to laugh, even though we did have to shout at one of the Sydney 38s!’ Putting the two fleets together did cause a few interesting mark rounding’s.

Angus Grinham and his team on Gusto, showed that their recently antifouled hull makes them a boat to contend with. The Gusto crew scored two second’s on the first day and were never far behind the lead boats.

Grinham had a warning for the other 32 owners; the crew plans to train hard for the upcoming NSW titles on March 19-20 and expect a good result from their efforts. Watch this space.

Peter Whitford and his team on Wirrajurned (the boat with the aboriginal markings) are also planing some professional coaching for his team before the NSW championship, so the class is hotting up.

Results:

1 Quickie (S.Muirhead/B.Caldwell/A.Kench) 8pts

2 Jester (D. & Z. Bull) 10

3 Gusto (A. Grinham) 16
