Nicorette, the only surviving supermaxi in the gale-decimated fleet, had a 50 nautical mile lead over her nearest rival, Sean Langman’s AAPT when she rounded Tasman Island at 1.38 this morning.
Third in the fleet is George Snow’s Brindabella followed the British Ker 55 Aera, skippered by Jez Fanstone, the handicap leader.
With the trimmers able to crack sheets and go onto a broad reach after 24 hours of hard beating into headwinds for 30-40 knots, her boatspeed increased from 9.5 knots to almost 20 knots.
As she neared the Iron Pot at the entrance to the Derwent River, her speed dropped to 13 knots.
She came into view, in the morning light, with her big white asymmetric glowing, slower but burst back up to 12 knots as she closed on the line.
She crossed on this damp Hobart morning at 05:10:44, in an elapsed time of 64 hours: 44 seconds.
She finished more than 21 hours outside Nokia’s record of 1 day 19 hours 48 minutes 02 seconds set in 1999.
