Tasar sailors to compete in Sail Sydney

In 2015 Tasar Sailing returned Sail Sydney for the first time since 2012 and they will be back again this year.

Hosted by Woollahra Sailing Club, Sail Sydney 2016 will run from Thursday 18 December through to Sunday 20 with 19 dinghy classes set to take to the Sydney Harbour, with the Tasar Association thrilled to be a part of the spectacle.

“The Tasar Association of New South Wales appreciate the inclusion of the class for Sail Sydney 2016,” Class Representative Brad Stephens said. “The opportunity for Tasar sailors to compete in a high profile event leading into the 44th Australian Championships in Port Stephens later this year into early next year is certainly a great.

“The entry list for the Tasar Nationals now stands at 70 of which 39 are from NSW and ACT, we anticipate these entries will form a pool for the entries to Sail Sydney,” Stephens said.

With the growth of Tasar Sailing nationally the question beckons as to what is luring sailors to the Tasar? Australian Sailing (AustSail) spoke with Brad Stephens (Stephens) about the growth of Tasar Sailing.

AustSail: What is the best thing about Tasar Sailing?

Stephens: Without a doubt the apparent simplicity of the Tasar belies the skill required to sail the boat well so they are a rewarding boat to sail. The Tasar fleet and sailors themselves are a welcoming group and after race social activities are a key part of planning at Tasar regatta’s.

AustSail: What is the general demographic of Tasar sailors in Australia?

Stephens: The dominating characteristic would be mixed men and women teams but in general the class sees varied combinations all around a competitive total crew weight range of 130kg (class minimum) to 150kg. Additionally, it has proved a popular boat with the Australian Defence Force and teams from the ADF Sailing Association will be competing including defending Sail Sydney champions Darryl Bentley and Rick Longbottom.

With that, Sail Sydney looks forward to hosting Tasar Sailing this December and seeing what Tasar Sailors can produce on the Sydney Harbour.

Sail Sydney is proudly supported by the NSW Government through Transport for NSW, Nautilus Marine Boat Insurance, Gill Marine Technical Clothing, Steve Jarvin Motors, Tohatsu Outboards, Lejen Marine and Sydney Harbour Boat Storage.

Cup Spy: "Burling Rule" unlikely to be changed
The Defender is unlikely to soften the Rules and allow open season on its sailing team. Despite the shift of three times America's Cup winner, Peter Burling it is understood that there is unlikely to be any softening of the Nationality rule to enable Burling to get any closer to the action than a chase-boat in the 38th America's Cup.
