Wendy Corzine and her Long Beach Yacht Club team won all of her races Saturday in winning the 2016 Mayor’s Cup World Sailing Grade Five Women’s Match Race in this event hosted by the Long Beach Yacht Club and raced on the Long Beach Sailing Foundation’s fleet of Catalina 37s.

The regatta experienced some challenges in getting entries, but co-chairs Camille Daniels and Mary Voigt were determined to run the event. Two LBYC match racing skippers - Corzine and Lisa Meier - entered and the event was modified to a first-boat-to-three-points wins regatta.

“I am so grateful that Camille and Mary and so many others moved heaven and earth to make this happen,” said Corzine. “We tried to get more teams, but it ended up just the two of us.

“We both love to sail and love sailing against each other. Lisa made the starts a real challenge, which was so good for all of us.”

Under a picture perfect Southern California sky with light breezes of four - seven knots the race committee ran a series of practice starts for the teams before starting the first match.

Meier stuck right with Corzine in the pre-starts, but Corzine never gave up her lead once she moved ahead.

“I am so proud to have participated in the 11th year of the Mayor’s Cup,” said Meier. “This is one of Long Beach Yacht Club’s legacy regattas, and it promotes women at the helm. Although it was a disappointment with the results, my crew’s work was spectacular, the boat was awesome and the race committee and umpires were stellar.”

Expressing her thoughts on the day and how things worked out, Corzine said, “We are so fortunate that we did so well today. It was as if everything just magically happened.”

In 2005, Camille Daniels---current Fleet Captain for LBYC---and Mary Voigt from the Long Beach Sailing Foundation were asked by then mayor for the city of Long Beach, Beverly O’Neil, and the city’s Sea Festival organizers to put together a women’s match race regatta. With sponsors and a budget the Mayor’s Cup ran through 2008.

In 2009 the recession hit and sponsor dollars dried up… and so did the event.

In 2015, with the renewed focus of LBYC becoming a match racing center, it was decided to put the Mayor’s Cup back on the calendar. Thanks to forward thinking members on the Budget Committee, the Flag Officers and Board of Directors the regatta now has the financial support it needs.
