2015 Copa del Rey MAPFRE – Opening day overall + Video

by Regatta Copa del Rey on 5 Aug 2015
Opening day - 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE María Muiña www.mariaphotos.com
The first day of 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE was marked by the presence of H.R.H. Felipe VI, who visited the Real Club Náutico de Palma to greet the crews before the start of the competition. 119 teams of six different classes opened their scoreboard to elect their first leaders; 17 other teams from two classes sailed their non-scoring practice races.

Six out of the eight competing classes sailed the two windward/leeward races scheduled for the opening day of 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE in an 8 to 15 knots southerly wind. The first leaders of the week are: 'Ran V' (Gaastra IRC 0), 'Mamma Aiuto' (Rías Baixas IRC 1), 'Es Tes Unno' (BMW ORC 1), 'Drac' (BMW ORC 2), 'Lelagain' (Air Europa X-35) and 'Ono' (Herbalife J80). The classes TP52 Super Series and Singular Kitchen Soto 40 sailed two practice races and will debut tomorrow in the competition.

Gaastra IRC 0
The fight for the title in the Gaastra IRC 0 class started with the defender in the control of the situation. George Sakellaris’ US Maxi 72 'Ran V', winner in 2014 onboard 'Shockwave', won both races today, and returned to the RCNP as the first leader of the week, ahead of Joern Larsen’s 'L4' (2-2) and Lionel Pean’s 'SFS' (3-4).

Rías Baixas IRC 1
In Rías Baixas IRC 1, the undisputed star was Naofumi Kamei’s Italian 'Mamma Aiuto', who took both races. In both races second place went to Kevin Whitcraft’s Thai 'THA72', followed by William Coates’ US 'Otra Vez'. Spanish 'Duende 52' finally won’t be able to compete this week due to the damage suffered on Friday night during the search operation of its skipper Jacinto Rodriguez.

BMW ORC 1
In the BMW ORC 1 class, the largest of this edition with 44 teams, the first two victories of the week went to Hendrik Brandis’ German 'Earlybird' and Daniel Figueirido’s Argentinean 'Humildad Zero'. But the provisional overall at the end of the day is led by Pep Soldevila’s Spanish 'Es Tes Unno', who sums the best results of the class (5-2), proving once again the importance of regularity in a fleet this competitive. Next in the ranking are Christian Plump’s German 'Elena Nova' (3-5) and 'Earlybird' (1-10,5).

BMW ORC 2
Ignacio Campos’ 'Tanit IV-Medilevel' and Pedro Campos’ 'Movistar' shared the victories of the day in the class BMW ORC 2. Although the final sum of results favours Ignacio Giamonna’s 'Drac' (2-4) who leads this category. It is followed by Alex Laplaza’s 'L`Immens' (4-3) and 'Tanit IV-Medilevel' (1-7).

Air Europa X-35
In the Air Europa X-35 class, Alessandro Solerio’s Italian 'Lelagain' started defending the title very strong, finishing today with two first places. The second place in the provisional is taken by local 'Red Eléctrica Española' skippered by Alberto Viejo, which went from lowest to highest (4-2). Third is Italian Paolo Sena’s 'Spirit of Nerina' (2-4).

Herbalife J80
Daniel de la Pedraja’s 'Ono' is the first leader in the Herbalife J80 class thanks to a second and a first in today’s races. Second is Javier Padron’s 'Marbella Team' (4-2) and third is Jesús Amaliach’s 'Herbalife' (3-3). Marc de Antonio’s 'Bribón-Movistar' won the first race of the day, but an eighth place in the following race relegated him to fourth place. The sad news of the day was Carlos Martinez’s 'Akewuele', who had to retire after breaking the mast when crossing with Javier Aguado’s 'Oxital' in the first race.

Royal Visit
H.R.H. King Felipe VI visited this morning the Real Club Náutico de Palma, to support with his presence the opening day of 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE. Don Felipe was welcomed at the main entrance of the yacht club by Javier Sanz and Emeric Fuster, president and vice president respectively of the RCNP and Javier Olías, territorial director of MAPFRE in the Balearic Islands. The King chatted with the crews before the boats headed towards the race course. Although he didn’t sail today, is expected that in the coming days Don Felipe will be able to fulfil the tradition of sailing onboard 'Aifos', which this year is competing in the BMW ORC 1 class.

Program onshore
The social activity in the Real Club Náutico de Palma didn’t stop since early morning when the crews enjoyed the fruits’ breakfast offered by Zespri. In the Restaurant El Náutico the Iberostar Brunch opened, who guests like Spanish celebrities Carolina Cerezuela and Carlos Moya did not want to miss. In the afternoon, the Singular Kitchen Show featured a master class by expert baker Antonio Merino. Once the teams docked in, the competitors enjoyed the music offered by Pachá at the Crew Village.

Tomorrow everyone will compete
Tomorrow an unprecedented show will be seen in Copa del Rey MAPFRE. The TP52 Super Series and Singular Kitchen Soto 40 will join the other fleets and the competition will gather for the first time 136 boats on the race course, a record in the 34 years of history of the race. The competition program has two windward/leeward races for all classes, with the first start scheduled at 13h00.

34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE is organized by the Real Club Náutico de Palma and is held until Saturday, August 8th.
