After the Volvo Ocean Race finished on Saturday night, Sail-World.com's NZ editor, Richard Gladwell caught up with Ryan Houston, a watch captain on Team Alvimedica.
Also a product of the RNZYS Youth Program, Houston is on his third Volvo Ocean Race. Previously he sailed on Delta Lloyd and then Sanya in the last race.
He talks about wanting to sail on a Kiwi boat in the next race
- how this race compares with the others in which he has sailed
- how small gains seem to be paying well
- the vexed issue of AIS on tactics
- tweaking the VO65
- navigational strategy
The cricket reference is a to a match in the Cricket World Cup, currently being played in New Zealand with a grudge match between Australia and New Zealand, always conducted in a very intense build-up. Houston tells us how the crews keep up with the news from home while at sea.
