10 ways to protect yourself from an unwanted shark encounter

With shark encounters and bites on the rise, Lindsay Lyon, Shark Advocate and Managing Director of Shark Shield, the world’s only proven shark deterrent technology, provides his tips on preventing a shark attack as the last days of summer roll in.

To decrease your chances of a shark encounter Lindsay suggests you wear a scientifically proven shark deterrent such as Shark Shield and observe the following guidelines/practice:
1. Swim, surf, or dive with other people
2. Swim in patrolled beaches if possible
3. Don’t wander too far from shore
4. Stay out the water at night, dawn, or dusk
5. Don’t enter the water if bleeding
6. Don’t wear high-contrast clothing or light reflecting jewellery
7. Avoid areas where animals, human, or fish waste enters the water
8. Avoid murky waters, harbour entrances channels, and steep drop-offs
9. If fish or turtles start to act frantically, leave the water.
10. Refrain from excessive splashing, and if you are diving and are approached by a shark, stay still as possible
