A cada atualização, uma surpresa. Quatro barcos disputam quilômetro a quilômetro a liderança da primeira etapa da Volvo Ocean Race, entre Alicante, na Espanha, e a Cidade do Cabo, na África do Sul. Com a aproximação ao destino final, Abu Dhabi, Team Brunel, Team Vestas Wind e Dongfeng confiam em suas estratégias para cruzar a linha de chegada em primeiro.

Por isso, as tripulações não param de trabalhar um minuto se quer. Um pequeno erro, por exemplo, pode custar a liderança do Abu Dhabi que, na noite anterior, recuperou a ponta que estava provisoriamente com o holandês Team Brunel. Na sequência aparecem quase colados Team Vestas Wind e Dongfeng. 'Os próximos dois dias serão vitais para a definição do vencedor', disse Ian Walker, comandante do Abu Dhabi.

O repórter a bordo do Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, Matt Knighton, disse que não há surpresa nessa troca de posições. 'Já nos adaptamos a essa nova estratégia de regata. Esse equilíbrio faz parte do novo modelo de barco, o Volvo Ocean 65'.

Já o representante do barco dinamarquês Team Vestas Wind, Brian Carlin, prevê fortes emoções nessa reta final. 'Temos uma boa e uma má notícia. A boa é que conseguimos voltar ao pelotão da frente. E a má é que os adversários estão bem perto da gente. Este é um verdadeiro teste para o novo projeto de barco.

Ficar apenas três quilômetros de vantagem após 19 dias de regata é impressionante. Os dias seguintes serão muito emocionantes'.

Outro dado interessante: a diferença entre o líder Abu Dhabi para o quarto colocado Dongfeng não chega a 30 quilômetros. Em quinto, aparece o Team Alvimedica, que ainda tenta investir no pelotão da frente. Mais atrás estão MAPFRE, que teve problemas com uma bomba de água, e o Team SCA, sexto e sétimo lugares, respectivamente.

Depois de passar quase uma semana pela costa brasileira, a flotilha já começa a migrar para o lado leste, até a África, dobrando a 45°. A pergunta é: quem vai ser o primeiro a avistar a Table Mountain, cartão postal da Cidade do Cabo, considerada uma das Sete Maravilhas do Mundo?
