The best of the OBR's blogs - OCTOBER 19
On deck, the atmosphere is excellent. The sailing conditions are exceptional. On the flat sea. Beautiful weather, a temperature still quite soft, flying fish, a little water on the deck, but not much. The disappointment of losing provisional leadership yesterday was largely offset by the feeling of having accomplished great things during this first week of racing.

'I think I burned more calories picking them out, than consuming a proper bite of food,' Stacey said. Stacey does not like spicy food, so lunch was a bit of a challenge.
Out here if you don't like your meal, well then you don't eat. Or you eat cereal, which does not have enough calories to keep you going. Racing offshore, you become more of a machine than human so keeping the machine stocked up on fuel is essential.
On land a lawyer wouldn't show up to work without their case briefs, and out here a sailor wouldn't show up to watch without being properly hydrated and fed.

Today is the first time we don't see one of the other boats all the time. It's a weird feeling that takes a little pressure off but also everyone knows that the other teams are pushing to win. On board, we're all very healthy and well fed. In a few days we will be sweating a lot at the Equator so many will lose those extra kilos, besides being the Volvo Ocean Race it's a perfect combination to get strong and lose weight!

The question on everyone’s mind is what next?
The Atlantic weather scene is being dominated by some pretty serious low-pressure systems to the north: an absolute walloping in the UK, and a hurricane off the coast of America. Though thousands of miles away, these storms are stretching much of the wind-generating pressure gradient we would typically use to cross the Equator.

The tension is rising to another octave on-board Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. Based on the latest position report, the teams that we’ve been battling with for the lead all day, Dongfeng, Vestas, and Brunel, look to have chosen to sail through the Cape Verde Islands. We chose 5 hours ago to go north and take a more northern, conservative, and traditional route and expected most everyone would follow us. They’re also sailing quite a bit faster than us.

In other local news today, Nicolai had his first sighting of Flying Fish; this Danish farmer had been told about this phenomenon days earlier but was convinced both his skipper and fellow crew had him stitched up. Late last night he was greeted with said phenomenon. The fully glory of a 10knt fish crossing paths with a 20knt Volvo made for a very interesting 30knt collision with his head. These fish can vary in size, some only 5cm long, other’s a sizeable 30cm. It’s no joke if these guys hit you in the wrong place. In Salty’s previous Volvo he was victim to a rather nasty black eye having made contact with one on night watch.
