The opening act of the 2014 Giraglia Rolex Cup was a 58-nm sprint under spinnaker from Sanremo to Saint-Tropez. 107 yachts took part, setting off at midnight on Friday, 13 June. First across the finish line on Saturday morning was the French VOR 70 SFS, skippered by former Whitbread Round the World Race winner, Lionel Péan. Richard Burton’s 35-foot Jet Lag took the overall win on handicap under IRC.
The Inshore Series began today with a 33-nm race out of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez to a mark off La Cavalaire-sur-mer. With the wind starting in the east and backing to the north it was a spectacular ride south for the 172 crews followed by a more taxing upwind return to the finish off Saint-Tropez. The Racing Mini-Maxis led the way, with Niklas Zennstrom’s Ran V crossing the line first in two hours 55 minutes 18 seconds. Andres Soriano’s Alegre was second home two and a half minutes later.
The Inshore Series continues tomorrow.
