Land Rover Winter Series 2014 - Stunning spinnaker runs for race two

It was a spectacular sunny winter’s day for Race two of the Land Rover Winter Series 2014, conducted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, with colourful spinnakers flying as boats made their way down the Harbour.
Elena Nova, the Judel Vrolijk 42, owned by Craig Neil that was shipped to Australia at the beginning of the year came out on top in Division A2 in the boat’s first Land Rover Winter Series race.
'I’m delighted with the result,' Neil said this afternoon. 'It’s good when it all comes together. We had a good challenge from St Hilliers Quest who started one minute behind us. It was tough going on the first lap but we managed to shake them off and hold them out.'
'We’re still getting used to the boat – it was a good hit out. We’ll have to come back next week and defend the win' Neil added.
Elena Nova made her Australian racing debut at the Australian IRC Championships last month and today’s course and conditions suited her much better than the windward/leeward courses of the IRC Championships. More Witchcraft (CYCA Vice Commodore John Cameron) finished second to Elena Nova with St Hilliers Quest (Tim Casey) third.
Race Officer Denis Thompson got the fleet of 112 away on time in an eight - ten knots westerly on their respective course A. By 12.30pm, the breeze had swung around to the south and built to 12 knots, and was predicted to build further throughout the afternoon but never reached over 15 knots.
Richard Holstein’s Sydney 38 Next won Division B from fellow Sydney 38 The Goat (Bruce Foye) with CYCA Commodore Howard Piggott and his Beneteau First 40 Flying Cloud third.
'It was a spectacular day – the weather was as forecast so we had the right set-up on the boat,' Holstein said.
'We had great fun onboard – I’ve got a few mums in the crew so we started the Mother’s Day celebrations early and we managed to get everyone home in time for a nice dinner!
'The Goat and Jackpot are the boats we’re keeping our eyes on and we were only really worried about The Goat around the LM5 mark. Racing is also tight with the other Sydney 38s as there is no separate Sydney 38 division this year.
'The boat performed really well and goes around the track just like a slot car,' Holstein added.
It was double joy for the team on Crosshaven – they won Division D and owner Sean Rahilly walked away with the keys to the Range Rover Evoque for the week.
'It was a beautiful winter’s day – we were very lucky on the first leg as the breeze shifted and favoured us,' Rahilly said.
'One of our crew, Rick Punshon, picked a wind shift which meant we had a terrific kite run from Fort Denison and managed to overtake most of our fellow competitors. Our crew work was outstanding today. Amante (Dennis Cooper) kept us really honest around the course.
'I’m looking forward to giving the Range Rover Evoque a good test drive this week,' Rahilly added. Amante finished second with The Philosophers Club (Peter Sorensen) third.
Bob Steel and his TP52 Quest made it two wins from two starts in Division A1 proving that last week’s win was no aberration. Steel was this week’s winner of the Noakes Group Lift and Stand Package.
Other divisional winners today were: Division C – Arch Rival (Steve Connors); Division E – Orbit (Matthew Brown); Division F – Windflyt (Doug Sturrock); Division G – Marigot Bay (Merryl Semple); Division J1 – L’Attitude (Robert Hunt, Jon Short and Miles Bastick); Division J2 – Sagacious V (David Hundt); Division K – Monkey Business (Paul Glynn)
The Land Rover Winter Series pointscore continues next Sunday, 18 May. Block entries for the season will be accepted up until 12 noon, Thursday 25 May with casual entries being accepted throughout the season.
