SLAM Combined High Schools Championship – Opening Day

Day one of the SLAM Combined High Schools Championship was an enthralling day of action on the water as Belmont bay delivered gusty conditions for the opening Invitational race. With the clouds rolling in and a severe wind warning issued, race organisers were apprehensive about sending the 125 strong fleet out. However, with the breeze not reaching the expected gale force winds conditions, and the wind blowing between 15-22 knots, spectators were treated to some high speed action and many crashes.

It was an eventful day on the water with plenty of drama throughout the fleet with only half the fleet finishing. Reigning champion Henry Makin, of Avondale College started where he left off last year with a win in the opening Invitational Race in his cherub ‘French Tickler’.

Behind him in second place was Nathan Lilley from Balgowlah Boys High School sailing his Flying 11 ‘Hi Roller.’ Further back in third place was ‘Off Tap’ a Hobie 16 sailed by Caleb White from Mackillop Senior College, closely followed by Will McKenzie sailing his Hobie 16, ‘Jeff’ from St Johns Nowra.

The event continues to provide competitors with a great opportunity to trial different classes and enjoy the off the water fun. 'We’ve always been committed to the highest quality of race management on the water and I think we have a formula that really works. I’m also fortunate to have a great team of people running the regatta, one of the most desirable sailing venues in the country as well as a terrific assembly of sponsors, beginning with SLAM, our naming right sponsor for the past four years and associate sponsor’s DeckHardware’ says Race Officer Rod Carter.

Racing will continue tomorrow.
