Clarence River cables may present a navigation hazard to boaters

by Roads and Maritime Services Media Unit on 26 Feb 2014 Roads and Maritime Services are advising skippers that submerged submarine cables may present a navigation hazard to boaters on the Clarence River at Lawrence.

Work is under way to remove the cables immediately downstream of Bluff Point Ferry at Lawrence at the coordinates:



1. 29 29’38.836 S
153 07’05.150 E

2. 29 29’37.128 S
153 06’56.968 E

Work to remove the submarine cables using divers and a barge with a crane on board anchored at the sites is expected to be completed by the end of April, weather permitting.

Skippers anchoring or trailing equipment are warned to avoid the area for safety reasons.

Skippers should use extreme caution when navigating in the area and are reminded they must follow all directions from a boating safety officer or a police officer.

All vessels must remain a safe distance and speed from the work and keep wash to a minimum.

Roads and Maritime reminds people to wear a lifejacket when boating. Lifejackets are required to be worn by boaters in vessels smaller than 4.8 metres when alone, at night or offshore.
