ISAF World Cup Miami - ISAF Sailing World Cup kicked off today in slow fashion as sailors waited for the warm breeze to fill in. All Olympic and Paralympic fleets were sent out to sail in approximately four-eight knots of breeze.
The Finn fleet launched from Biscayne Bay Yacht Club after a slight delay today. Greg Douglas (RCYC) currently in excellent position after day one with a 4, 10, sitting in sixth overall. Australia's Oliver Tweedell currently has the lead. Martin Robitaille (RCYC) further back in 14th.
The robust Laser fleet, including 20 Canadians, scored two races today in the light breeze. Tom Burton leads the way with two bullets on the day. Lee Parkhill (RCYC) is currently top Canadian in 21st with a 7, 13.
The Radials followed the Lasers on the course today with Paige Railey (USA) holding down top spot. Claire Merry (RCYC) used the light wind to her advantage and scored a 3, 10 to sit fifth overall.
The Nacra 17, 49er and FX fleets are sailing at the sprawling Miami Rowing Club this week and kicked it off with a mixed bag of results. Canadian Nacra team Luke Ramsay-Nikola Girke came ready to play after months of hard training with a two, four, sitting in fourth behind ITA, AUT, and GBR.
49er Canadians struggled in faint breeze which saw Brodeur-Stranix (RCYC) in top canuck position (20th) while top Canadian in the FX was Erin Rafuse (RNSYS) and Danielle Boyd in 26th (KYC-RNSYS).
Sailing from the Coconut Grove Sailing Club, RSX men and women prepped their boards and headed out for some pumping sessions. Up and coming Canadian sailor Gabriel Verrier Paquette is in good position after day one, in ninth overall.
Launching from the Shake a Leg centre, Bruce Millar (RVicYC) sailed to a seventh and third. Allan Leibel had double two's. SKUD team McRoberts-Gay (RVicYC) had a strong day, leading in the second race, pulled out two second place finishes. Sonar team Tingley-Lutes-Campbell (RNSYS) had a more difficult day with a fifth and fourth despite leading in the second race at the bottom mark. Full results were not available at time of publication.
