Communities all around the Maritimes remember those who were lost on the water. But they also celebrate the remarkable people who have come face to face with the ocean at its worst and - against all odds - managed to survive.

Lucky to be Alive is a half hour documentary that shares amazing stories from people who narrowly escaped death at sea and the Coast Guard rescuers who risk their lives to save others.

One of the subjects of interest to Canadian sailors is the story of Derek Hatfield and his dismasting off the coast of South America while competing in the Around Alone single handed round the world race in 2002-2003. Hatfield eventually finished the race first in his class and third overall in his division.

For more than thirty years Land and Sea has brought you stories from people who live off the land and the sea. We cover issues that affect people in rural communities which ultimately affect those in cities as well.

We bring you stories from those who celebrate life living close to nature, who promote and protect their culture and traditional ways of doing things. There are stories of success and sometime failures that portray the unique way Atlantic Canadians deal with the challenges and pleasures of living on the east coast.
