Most anglers have made a great start to the fishing season with what turned out to be a very productive opening week. The weather enabled fishing on most rivers and anglers seemed to have the best success fishing higher up in the river systems near headwaters and confluences with small streams.
Reports from those anglers who caught fish during the opening week said that the fish were in superb condition and the trout seem to have come through the spawning period in great shape! Already it is shaping to be another excellent season.
Here's the outlook for the coming weekend:
Hutt River and tributaries
The Hutt River and all tribs have had some rain throughout the week and are marginal at the time of writing. It is expected to be fine with a few showers over the coming weekend. Check out the live flow here.
Kapiti Coast
At the time of writing all rivers (Otaki , Waikanae and the Ohau) are fishable for the coming weekend which as it appears the recent rain hasnt influenced the rivers too much.
Wairarapa
Western Wairarapa rivers - Ruamahanga, Waiohine, Waingawa - At the time of reporting all tributaries and mainstems are marginal for the coming weekend.
Eastern Wairarapa rivers - Kopuaranga, Huangarua, Taweru - are all marginal at time of writing and will be marginal until later next week.
Manawatu
The Upper Manawatu river is fishable and will be ok for the weekend. The lower parts are still dirty and are likely to be marginal. The weather this weekend is showers with a few fine spells.
Rangitikei
At time of writing the Rangitikei River is fishable. Fishing should be ok for the coming weekend, however make sure you check the live flows before heading out on the Rangitikei as it is possible rain from higher up may have an effect on the flow.
Tip of the week - Fish are holding in the deep water
A common piece of feedback from anglers over the last week has been that the fish are sitting deep in the pools.
The best way to approach this is to use weighted nymphs when fly fishing or heavy spinners if spin fishing. A weighted nymph will allow your hook to get down to the depth where the fish are holding in those big pools and will increase your chances of a hook up as they are less likely to rise and take off the surface.
For those spin fishermen out there, using a heavy spinner, or a 'sinking' model will also help your chances. If the pool your fishing in is deep, allow a few seconds when you cast your lure out to give it time to sink near the bottom before you begin your retrieve.
As it is still early in the season there is less activity on or near the surface so it is important you fish to the current conditions - fish the deeper parts and watch your catch rates soar!
Fishing reports
Wellington area
The Hutt River has had some rain this week and fishing is liekly to be marginal. Some nice fish were caught over the weekend and many more spotted near Silverstream and the Lower Hutt city sections.
Kapiti area
The rivers recieved rain early in the week which has now cleared up. All three rivers will be good for fishing over the coming wekeend with reasonable weather expected.
Wairarapa
The Wairarapa region has also recieved some rain earlier in the week which still seems to be flowing on the high side. There may still be some colour in most rivers for the weekend.
Manawatu
The upper Manawatu River is likely to be a favorable option for anglers as good numbers of fish are expected from the gorge upstream. The weather is forecast to be showery with a few fine spells for the coming weekend.
