This weekend, the 21st annual Verve Cup Offshore Regatta will be hosted at the Chicago Yacht Club. The event features a three-day offshore course race on Friday through Sunday, as well as a one-day distance race taking place on Saturday.

As one of the largest course-racing regatta in North America, Verve Cup has developed as a world-class event, attracting national and international sailing competitors.During the regatta, Chicago Yacht Club will welcome over 1,800 racers, spouses and guests at their Monroe harbor clubhouse.

Competitors participate in multiple races, and boats sail either with a rating handicap or a one design so that boats of different size and character can compete against one another in one of the 18-plus racing sections. Overall prizes are awarded to the top finishers in each section, with one offshore boat winning the perpetual Verve Cup Trophy. The Verve Cup trophy dates from 1893 and is Chicago Yacht Club’s oldest trophy. Overall prizes are awarded for each class of boat.

Race Chair Martin Sandoval said 135 boats ranging in size from 25 feet to 60 feet and carrying crew from four to sixteen persons have registered to race this year. 'There will be 107 boats racing on two circles, with one circle just north of Navy Pier, and one due east just north of the four-mile pumping station,' Sandoval said. 'There are also 28 boats that will be doing the distance race. They're broken up into three sections, each section sailing a different course. Bigger boats get a longer course; the smaller boats might get a shorter course, depending on Mother Nature.'

New to the Verve Cup Offshore this year is the J/109 North American Championship, which started today (Thursday, August 8th) and goes through Sunday. After the first day of racing first place is held by Northstar, owned/skippered by Chicago Yacht Club member David Gustman of Wilmette, IL. Rick Lyall’s Storm is in second place. Lyall, of Wilton, CT, is a member of the New York Yacht Club and the Storm Trysail Club of Larchmont, NY. Kevin Saedi’s Momentus is currently third place in the J/109’s. Saedi is from Oak Park, IL and is a member of the Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago.
