Coast Central Catamaran Championships (C4) day 2 + Video

by Miami Yacht Club on 5 Aug 2013
Coast Central Catamaran Championships 2013 Miami Yacht Club
It was a beautiful day at Racine on Saturday for day two of the Coast Central Catamaran Championships (C4), though challenging conditions on the water for our competitors. Light breeze, 5-8 knots out of the NE, swinging right, with lumpy sea kept everyone looking for power and tactical advantage. Although the breeze came up a little in the afternoon, after four races the sailors were ready for a break. PRO Matt Bounds obliged and Racine beachgoers were treated a beautiful view of the fleet broad reaching back to the beach with spinnakers flying.

If the conditions were testing, our leaders passed with flying colors. In the F16 class Ravi Parent and Sam Armington extended their lead with three bullets and a third and ended the day with nine points from eight races after discarding a fourth. Taylor Reiss and Carson Shores had a better day than Friday to move into second place overall with results of 1,2,3,3 and have 20 points.

Another team to show a signficant improvement on day two were Drew Carlyle and Katie Flood. They led the fleet for most of Race 7, though were passed near the finish by Parent and Armington. They finished the day with results of 2,5,2,5 to move into fourth overall.

One other impressive performance deserves mention, from Tim Holton, sailing for the first time in the this event with our youngest competitor, 11 year old crew Eddie Hansen. Tim and Eddie had the largest individual lead in the whole series so far when they led around the first weather mark in Race 6 by 55 seconds from Parent and Armington.

In the F18 class, Robbie Daniel and Gary Chu continued their blazing form from Friday, and were untroubled by the rest of the fleet in scoring another four bullets. However CRAW sailors Guy Selsmeyer and JJ Johnson, taking advantage of our three day scoring rule also took to the water for the first time Saturday and managed to establish a slender advantage over John Bauldry and Bea Gintere for second place overall.

At the end of day two, our video reporter Tom Hoscheidt spoke with several of the competitors to get their impressions of the day's racing.
