by The Sail-World.com Team on 17 Jul 2013 Another busy week on the UK and International sailing scene with ongoing regattas and even more racing action to look forward to.

On the opening day of the 2013 Coutts Quarter Ton Cup, there were more glamorous classes, modern classes, undoubtedly more expensive classes, but you would have to go a long way to find a class that offers more spectacularly close racing and bang for your buck than the Quarter Ton Class. The pace was fast and furious and four different boats claimed a race victory.

Jon Emmett, who coached Chinese Gold medallist and World Sailor of the year Lijia (Lily) Xu to victory in Weymouth in 2012, won the UK Masters' national title in the Laser Radial class during the weekend. Jon was amongst the 121 helms from across the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands who packed the famous Cobb and harbour beach at Lyme Regis for three days. Despite some pre-event misgivings over the possible absence of wind this past weekend, and a one-hour postponement on each day, the sea breeze duly arrived to play its part and help make the Royal Southern Yacht Club's July Summer Regatta one to remember. The 2013 Sail First ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship had its opening ceremony yesterday in Cyprus, with ISAF President Carlo Croce officially welcoming 351 sailors from 61 nations. 12 young British sailors have been selected to strut their stuff on the waters of Limassol. Kieran Martin insists it is full steam ahead after the British windsurfer opened his event assault today in impressive fashion. Racing continues until 19th July.

On Thursday 18th July, eight carefully selected candidates will put their metal to the test through the 2013 Artemis Offshore Academy UK Selection Trials, running until 21st July. The intensive four-day trials are an opportunity for candidates to demonstrate their ability to overcome the challenges presented by solo offshore racing and their desire to succeed on one of the most competitive racing circuits in the world.

And finally, Burnham Week is right around the corner – commencing on Saturday 24th August. On-line entries have opened and some early birds have already entered. There are events lined up for spectators on the Quay and the racing is set to be as varied and flexible as ever.
