Hot competition at hand for the Chelsea Clock Seafarer Trophy

by Chip Thayer on 11 May 2013
SW
The competition for the new Chelsea Clock Seafarer Trophy will be hot. Trophies will be awarded in each division to the boat with the best combined results in the 2012 Bermuda race and the 2013 Annapolis-Newport Race. There are already nineteen entries that also sailed the Newport to Bermuda race last year. Below is the trophy and the scoring that will be used to select the winner in each of the Annapolis-Newport race divisions.

A keeper trophy, crafted by Chelsea Clock, will be awarded for each division sailing in the 2013 Annapolis-Newport Race (IRC, PHRF, D-H, Cruiser) to a boat and captain that also sailed the 2012 Newport-Bermuda Race. The award will be based on the combined performance in their class in each race. Boats that sailed IRC in both races will be scored using their IRC results in both races. Boats that sail PHRF in Annapolis-Newport will be scored using their ORR results in Newport Bermuda. Scoring will be low point normalized for class size. The formula will be: Score = (100 x N2B class position / number in N2B class) + (100 x A2N class position / number in A2N class).

The Chelsea Clock Seafarer Trophy, shown left, designed as a perpetual trophy for display at the Annapolis Yacht Club, is a special edition of the company’s famed Mariner clock, first patented and produced by Chelsea in 1911.

Considered one of the finest nautically-inspired clocks ever made in this country, the Mariner is a true masterpiece of American clock making. The Seafarer Trophy features Chelsea Clock’s renowned chiming Ship’s Bell mechanism. The clock’s dial is painstakingly crafted of deeply etched brass that is hand silvered and enameled. The wood base and back are crafted of solid mahogany, while the wheel’s ring and base are finished using a proprietary hand-rubbed copper bronze-finishing process. The Chelsea Clock Seafarer Trophy measures an impressive 17 ½ inches high and weighs thirty-three pounds.
