John Messenger dominates Audi Melges 20 Lake Ontario event at PCYC

by Katie Nicoll on 15 Aug 2012
Start of racing on Day one with wind to play with off Port Credit Harbour on Lake Ontario - 2012 Audi Melges 20 Lake Ontario series at PCYC Bob Thayer
The Melges 20 is an immerging fleet in Southern Ontario. Fleet Captain, Rhonda Joyce, has been a huge promoter of the class and its owners are growing annually, as the boat is extremely fun to sail, especially when it gets up on a plane in 20 knots of breeze. … there is nothing like it! It’s definitely high adrenalin racing, that’s for sure, hitting 19 knots of speed!

Saturday’s racing was highlighted by high winds and planing conditions. Sunday’s conditions were much more challenging with light, shifty winds off the Port Credit Yacht Club harbour. PRO, Paul Clissold and mark/pin boat Kristina Gilbert did an outstanding job setting good, square courses, despite the rest of the race crew succumbing to sea sickness.

On Saturday night there was great après sailing get-together at the Brogue on Lakeshore Road in Port Credit where the competitors were treated to some great appetizers and sliders! The Brogue is the 'home' of Olympic Sailor Mike Wolfs and a great supporter of sailing in Toronto’s west end.

John Messenger, a former J/24 sailor, with J/24 crew Jeremy Edwards and Mark Goodyear, demonstrated excellent tactics and crew work to come out on top. Well done!
