At the ISAF Conference in Lisbon the Hobie Tiger was officially endorsed as a full International Class. It joins other members of the Hobie family that are also full ISAF International Classes; Hobie 14, 16, 17 and 18 are all ISAF International Classes. The Hobie Tiger is one of the fastest growing Formula 18 classes in the world. It is a reward for the boat that has won the first two Formula 18 World Championships.
It has also been seen as the perfect training boat for many Olympic Tornado sailors wanting to race with increased sailing participation.
At the recent Hobie Tiger Worlds held at Lake Garda, there were 88 boats from 12 countries competing in only its second world championship. This demonstrated the rapid acceptance of this new boat. This new type of catamaran sailing with twin trapeze and spinnaker is sweeping the world with new excitement and brining people back in to the sport of catamaran sailing. With record numbers now being sold in the North American region the Hobie Tiger looks sure to continue to grow.
With the Hobie Tiger now being upgraded to a full ISAF International Class there will be the inclusion of a Women’s World Championship in the next Carlsberg Hobie Tiger World Championship scheduled in Singapore February 2003.
