Following an exciting weekend of ocean racing outside of Narragansett Bay, American Eagle, helmed by skipper Jeff Randall, emerged victorious at the 12 Metre North American Championship, which brought legendary America's Cup 12 Metres together for seven races over three days.
American Eagle, Weatherly and Courageous returned to the celebrated waters off Newport, where the 12 Metre era remains an indelible part of the city's sailing history.
The racing was close and competitive with American Eagle winning by a tie-break to come in first overall, with Courageous and Weatherly close behind. "It was an incredible weekend of racing, and to come away with the win against this fleet makes it especially meaningful," said Randall. "We started off with light conditions that by Sunday, morphed into a steady rain, but the crew stayed focused and sailed exceptionally well. There's something very special about racing these boats here in Newport."
The championship, supported by sponsors Pure Insurance, Citizens Private Wealth, and Mt. Gay Rum, capped a successful weekend on and off the water, bringing sailors and members of the international 12 Metre community together to celebrate the competition, camaraderie and enduring legacy of the class.
The weekend also offered a glimpse of what lies ahead. The 12 Metre Fleet of the Americas will build on that momentum with the 2027 Road to the Worlds, leading into the 2028 12 Metre World Championship in Newport.
