2026 Hobie 16 International Championship Qualifying Concludes at Ocean Springs Yacht Club

by Rich McVeigh 22 Sep 17:18 PDT September 21-25, 2026

Qualifying racing has concluded at the 2026 Hobie 16 International Championships in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, with six races completed over the first three days of competition.

The fleet has faced a light and, at times, frustrating weather pattern that has tested the sailors' ability to find and maintain speed in constantly changing conditions.

The first two days brought moderate southerly winds, allowing racing to proceed, although conditions remained relatively light. On the third day, the wind shifted to the northeast and became very light, with frequent shifts across the racecourse. Under those conditions, keeping the boat moving, finding pressure and anticipating the next wind shift became a significant challenge for the competitors.

Rather than simply rewarding raw boat speed, the conditions have placed a premium on patience, tactical awareness and the ability to respond quickly as the wind moves around the course.

Gold and Silver Fleets

With qualifying now complete, the 54-boat championship fleet will be divided into Gold and Silver fleets. The top 40 teams will advance to the Gold Fleet, where they will continue racing for the 2026 Hobie 16 International Championship.

The remaining teams will compete in the Silver Fleet as racing continues through Friday, September 25.

With the fleet now separated for the championship phase, every race will take on added importance. Teams advancing to the Gold Fleet will face the strongest competition in the fleet as the championship moves toward its conclusion.

Championship Racing Continues

The Ocean Springs Yacht Club has provided the venue for this international championship, bringing Hobie 16 sailors together for ten days of competition in the waters off the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

After three days of qualifying, the fleet has had to adapt to conditions that have been anything but predictable. The light winds and frequent shifts have made consistency difficult and have created opportunities for teams able to stay focused and capitalize when the wind changes.

After the first three days, Enrique Figueroa/Paula Figueroa (PUR) lead following by Francisco Figueroa/Faith Payne (PUR), Alejandro De La Guardia/Mariana Gonzalez (CUB).

The championship continues through Friday, September 25, with the Gold and Silver fleets now set for the next stage of competition.
