The world's elite single-handed sailors will set sail for the Gulf of Thailand as Pattaya's renowned Royal Varuna Yacht Club (RVYC) in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand officially hosts the 2027 OK Dinghy World Championship from February 19 to February 26, 2027.

The prestigious event marks the championship's anticipated return to Thai waters for the first time since 2013. More than a hundred competitors, coaches, and international supporters from Europe, Australasia, the Americas, and Asia are expected to arrive on the Eastern Seaboard for two weeks of high-octane racing and warm-weather competition.

A storied heritage in Thai waters

The OK Dinghy holds a cherished place in Thailand's sporting history. Designed in 1956 by Danish naval architect Knud Olsen, the 4-meter, single-handed racing dinghy became iconic across the kingdom through the passion of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX). His Majesty famously hand-built and raced OK Dinghies, winning a joint gold medal for Thailand in the class at the 1967 Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games.

Today, the class is enjoying a vibrant international renaissance, and local organizers at Royal Varuna Yacht Club are preparing for one of the largest competitive fleets the venue has ever welcomed.

World-class tropical racing conditions

While northern-hemisphere sailors contend with freezing winter conditions, Pattaya offers an idyllic racing setting with consistent 12-18 knot tropical breezes, gentle sea swells, and water temperatures averaging a balmy 28°C.

To maximize the experience for overseas visitors, Royal Varuna Yacht Club has lined up an extended festival of sailing throughout January and February 2027, featuring:

  • Jan 29-31, 2027: Thailand Open ILCA Championship
  • Feb 5-7, 2027: Varuna Masters Regatta (ILCA & OK Dinghy)
  • Feb 13-15, 2027: Pre-Worlds
  • Feb 19-26, 2027: The 2027 OK Dinghy World Championship

Boosting sports tourism on the Eastern seaboard

Beyond the sporting spectacle on the water, the World Championship provides a substantial boost to local tourism and hospitality. With competitors traveling alongside family, shore crew, and international race officials, local hotels, restaurants, and transport services across South Pattaya, Pratumnak Hill, and Jomtien are set to benefit from extended stays.

"Pattaya offers world-class race management and unbeatable sailing conditions paired with genuine Thai hospitality," said regatta organizers. "With modern logistics and container shipping now well under way from key sailing nations, we look forward to delivering a world-class regatta that showcases Thailand on the global sporting stage."
