Sharpie open meeting at Overy Staithe Sailing Club

by Jennie Clark 17 May 08:55 PDT 16-17 May 2026

Overy Staithe SC held their annual Sharpie open over the weekend of 16 and 17 May, with a fleet of ten boats taking part.

Saturday's two races were on the evening tide and were sailed in the lagoon on a relatively high tide. Chris Gibbs/Graham White (Wells SC) showed a clean pair of heels in both races and it was a Wells SC 1, 2, 3 for race 1 with the Malderijs finishing in second and Chris Gibbs/Charlie Orton in third.

Race 2 saw Sam Neal/Marcus Flint (Brancaster Staithe SC) finish second behind Gibbs/White with the Malderijs in third.

Sunday's races were on the morning tide with the 7am start meaning early alarm calls. The very light wind which had been forecast turned out to be slightly stronger than expected which made for some excellent racing. Gibbs/Orton took line honours in race 3 with the Malderijs second and Gibbs/White in third.

The final race saw the Malderijs retire with a broken jib block. Gibbs/White took another bullet, finishing ahead of Gibbs/Orton with Ben and Paul Goakes (Overy Staithe SC) in third.

The next Sharpie meeting is at Brancaster Staithe SC on 6 and 7 June.

I am not sure anyone knows how many people ‘Wallie' taught to sail, but judging by the number of people he kept in contact with, all over the world, it was thousands. Wallie was industrious, but in many ways he WAS the industry. Posted on 24 Nov 2024
