The first weekend of the 4 race series for the 'Beck Trophy' saw the fleet gathering for early starts on both Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 April at Overy Staithe SC.
This new trophy recognises the immense contribution to the club made by Peter and Melba Beck and their family and combines the results of the 4 'pennant' races which the club races for on personal handicap, with 3 of the 4 races to count to the Beck Trophy, and each pennant also raced for as an individual trophy.
Ten boats arrived at the start line for race 1 of the Beck Trophy on Saturday. The wind was force 2 south westerly in brilliant sunshine. Alex and Paul in the Sharpie had a good start as did Ash Deakin in his Laser and Pete Turner in his OK, once he had sorted out where the first mark was. The Albacore of Sam and Richard Mason chased the leaders most of the way round both laps of the course. Ash lost ground taking his penalty having had problems with the tide and mark F.
At the finish the Sharpie was two minutes ahead of Pete in his OK with the Laser a further 25 seconds behind. Having applied personal handicaps Pete finished two seconds ahead of Alex and Paul in the Sharpie. They in turn finished two seconds ahead of Ash in his Laser.

A cold north westerly greeted eight sailors for the Jubilee Trust pennant race on Sunday morning. A rather crowded start resulted in Alex and Paul being over the line in their Sharpie, as was Spike Turner in his OK and Mark Beck in his Europe.
A rather tactical beat followed in the sluicing spring tide with Pete Turner having learnt from past mistakes plotting the right course to the windward mark pulling out a good lead while Ashley Deakin in his Laser admitted that he learnt quite a few lessons on that beat, even though he has sailed at Overy for at least 40 years. The Sharpie sailed very well to take the lead on the second lap but couldn't pull away from Pete in his OK. Spike Turner in his OK also did well to pull through to third. The last two races for the Beck Trophy are on May 2nd/3rd.
